Planning: Similar videos

Structure - Jhené Aiko - The Pressure (Explicit):

Structure:
The video is structured the way we want ours to be with many different narratives throughout the video and shows star image. This is done using pans and fades in and out with straight cuts. As the song goes on song goes on it shows the problems of all the characters and shows all negative narrative and this is how we want our video to be.
Narratives:
The narratives in this video are extremely similar to our narrative for example we have relationship problems in our video and so does this one. At the end of the video the characters is all alone and that is how our video will be except the characters will commit suicide in our video.
Performance:
The star is in a dark room alone with a light over her with darkness around her this is how we want our star to be in a room alone in the dark.

Artist - Rihanna - Stay ft. Mikky Ekko:
Camera work/Facial expression:
To show her emotion allot of close up shots are used throughout the video as she is crying to get her sadness across to the audience. She has a very drained and zooned out look throughout the video.

Body language:
Her body language is very into herself as she is hugging her knees and hiding her body showing she just wants to be alone by herself.

Performance:
She is alone in a bath tub throughout the video to show the audience she wants to isolate herself from everyone else. In our video we want our star to put this across to the audience.

Costume/Make up:
Her make up is very nude and  natural showing the audience she is very stripped back this allows her to connect with the audience as she is more real.

Content - Five Finger Death Punch - Coming Down:
Narrative:
Narrative shows the stories of two teenager going through bullying that has led them down the route of suicide. It shows us the troubles they go through and how one person can save them from what they want to do.
Performance:
No performance is shown as star image has not been used you can only hear the band in the background the video is focused on the narratives.
Concept: No concept is used at all the video is very serious and focused on the narrative.

Mise en scene :

Planning: Locations

Locations:

Location 1 the house:

We decided to use a house as our first location as it is suitable for the first narrative in our music video. The house is where the couple in our first narrative will be arguing and fighting around the house as the song is played over it lyrics relevant to this are "And I cant remember the last time I took love from anyone." This is relevant as when at home with your partner your meant to feel loved yet the couple contradict this as they argue and fight we felt this was a valid problem to bring up in our video and fits what we are trying to put across to our audience.

Advantages:
  • Easy to find this location
  • Relevant to the narrative we have chosen
  • Many different rooms in a house so like having many locations in one.
Disadvantages:
  • Not much space so is hard to film in the small rooms.
  • Lighting issues.
  • Neighbours might think the fighting is real.
Location 2 the train station:
Relevant to lyrics: "Crucify me."

Relevant to genre: Hip-Hop usually uses run down areas as it is aimed at the lower classes in society so people can relate to it.

Relevant to target audience: If a teenager wants to run away public transport is what they run to first.

Advantages:
  • Easy to get to.
  • Time efficient.
  • Large space.
Disadvantages:
  • Other people traveling could get in our shots.
  • People may think our actor is actually trying to kill herself.
  • Being near the edge is dangerous.
Location 3 empty streets:
Relevant to lyrics: "Are you hating yourself? Do you really hate me." This will show our second narrative the prom girl being bullied then running away wanting to be alone.

Relevant to genre: Urban streets relevant to Hip-Hop.

Relevant to genre: Young people just want to run away and be alone when hurt or in times of stress.

Advantages:
  • Lots of options.
  • Large space.
  • Realism.
  • Can film locally.
Disadvantages:
  • Cars could get in our shots.
  • People could get in our shots.
  • Hazards.
Location 4 dark room:
Relevant to lyrics:
"I cant recall the last time I took advice from anyone". This is relevant as young people only trust themselves and don't listen to others.

Relevant to genre:
Hip-hop is all about people, themselves and their feelings this shows this location is relevant to the genre as its a place of thought and self reflection.

Relevant to target audience:
It suits the idea of wanting to curl up and hide alone this is a common thing between young teens to want to be alone and think and they are our target audience.

Advantages:
  • No disruptions in our shots.
  • Easy to give direction to actor.
  • Can be filmed at anytime.
  • Not hard to create the shot.
Disadvantages:
  • Lighting is hard to use.
  • Quality of video.
Conclusion:
In conclusion researching my locations has been very beneficial to me as I now know the strengths and weaknesses of our locations and how we are going to use them therefore it is going to make filming allot easier.

Planning: Outline of narrative

Outline of narractive:

I like the video that we have chosen as it is talking about and making people more aware about the problem people go through in their live everyday such as suicide , parental problems and Relationship issues.

The music video will be mostly performance and narrative based with a little bit of concept. We have decided to plan our video like this because this allows us to be able to tell a story and raise awareness of some of the struggles people go through as well as have star image and bring entertainment for the viewer through the dancers.

Theories:

Goodwin-
We are following some of this theory as we will be including editing that matches the pace of the song and the visuals will make sense to the lyrics.

Dyer-
We will be following this theory as we are using star image with our 2 main characters by using lip syncing the rapper and the singer.

Mulvey-
We will not be using this theory as we do not want our female characters to be represented as sexual object and instead we want them to be represented as vulnerable and innocent in order for the audience to understand their struggles.

Hebdige:
We are not going to use this theory as although our visuals and themes are not mainstream they do not resist mainstream and do not fall into a subculture and instead is aimed at a niece audience.

Adorno:
We are not following this idea as we are not trying to manipulate put audience and turn them into masses with our video.

Thes results of this graph were equally split 10 to 10 this tell me from the the people who took thr graph half prefer male singers and half prefer female singers.

The results of this question show me that more people who took my questionaire think that notion of looking is important than dont.

Planning: Choosing and appealing to out audience

Choosing and appealing to out audience

What is important to know about audiences when creating music videos:
When creating a music video you need to know allot about your audience as the more you know about your target audience the easier it will be for you to create the content that they enjoy so that you can be a successful artist because without know your target audience you could create content that they don't enjoy that will not appeal to them so then the artist will not get any success.

My audience:

Age - 14 to 25
Gender - Unisex
Race - All races
Audience category - E to C1
Income bracket and status - 30k and below and status would be lower and working class people (E to C1).
Hobbies and interests - Parties, Dancing, Love, Alcohol, Drugs and Hanging out with friends.

Audience reaction to my video:
Audience engagement - The audience engagement with the video will allow them to have their own unique views of the video and will ensure they are active when watching.

Audience expectations - The audience will expect a message to be put across in the video that will hit them hard and make them think about what they have seen and be more aware of the typical issues of young adults in their everyday lives.

Audience foreknowledge - Before seeing the video the audience should know the star image of the artist and the artists style of music so they will know if it appeals to them or not.

Audience identification - This is how the audience will relate the message in the music video that the artist is putting across to them.

Audience placement - This is the direct relation that the artist and music has the to the person watching the video and how they connect with my video on an emotional level and a personal as if they see products being promoted in the video this could cause them to buy it or if they already have the product feel like they have a connection with the artist because they have the same product.

Conclusion: I have identified this group as my target audience as the issues that are put across in the video that we are trying to raise awareness for are issues that people of these ages could have in their lives so they will be able to directly relate and feel connected to the music video.

Research: Audience

Audiences

What are audiences: Audiences are the people that artists target to try to sell their music and try to make sure it caters to their target audiences tastes. Its important to know your target audience so that you know who you are trying to target and you know what kind of music they like so it will make sure they like your music.

How are people categorised: The ways that audiences can be categorised are:

  •  Age
  • Gender
  • Race
  • Class
  • Location
  • Income
  • This information is taken with other information like what kind of worker you are to put you a audience in to certain categories.

    Advantages of categorising audience:
    • You will know what your audience is interested in.
    • Can make content specific for your audience.
    • You know the budget of your audience.
    • Use the information to encourage companies to advertise on your radio station.
    Disadvantages of categorising audience:
    • People in the same category may like different music.
    • Only considers income and status not the peoples interests.
    Different genres have different audiences:

Rock - Rock has a original audience just like other genres the people have their own views on life and tend to be anti conformist and wear dark clothing and fit in categories of E, D and C2.

Hip-Hop - On the other hand this genre of Hip-Hop has very conformist views on everything and wear very conformist clothing however they tend to fit in the categories of  E and D just like Rock.

    Audience reactions:

Audience reaction in relation to Goodwin, Dyer, Hebdige:

Goodwin - Goodwin said that starts are manufactured in a certain way to make them appeal to a audience.

Dyer - Dyers says that companies turn these stars purely into products used to make money and manipulate a audience.

Hebdige - Hebdige says that someone background and social class determines what kind of music they will listen to.

Conclusion - This has helped me to understand the different audiences there and what they listen. The audience I will be aiming at are E, D, C1 and C2 ages 15+.

    Research: Popular music theory

    Popular music theory

Introduction: It is important that we know each theory and know who made each theory because these theories show us how music videos work and how we can make the video successful. It is important we know this information as it is key to enabling us to make a successful music video.

Popular culture: Popular culture is all the mainstream and conformist  ideas, perspectives, attitudes, memes, images, and other phenomena that there are that people follow in todays culture. What is popular culture is hugely influenced by the mass media so they control what is popular the culture for the masses. As this is controlled this can also relate to what music is popular at different times as if it becomes popular culture then it will be seen as something that makes you cool and in turn will make that form of music popular culture.

Antonio Gramsci and Hegemony: Antonio Gramsci introduced the idea of Hegemony this is when ruling class values and ideas are dominate what we see. The control of media influences everything we see such as what shows are on TV an which are cancelled and what news stories are covered and not covered on the news. This is done so that everyone who watches the shows and the news will be seeing the same thing so will have the same ideas and wont question the dominant views in society. This had been challenged through people being able to create their own music and videos on media formats such as YouTube and sound cloud as mainstream media cant control them.

Frankfurt School: Frankfurt school believe that popular music is the end product of a production line where everything sound similar. This means that the music that we listen to is manufactured the way that the mainstream media want it to sound so they control what we see as mainstream music so they can control what we like.

Adorno: Adorno was German sociologist, philosopher and musicologist. He was a leading member of the Frankfurt school of critical theory he argued in 1903-69 that capitalism fed people with products of a culture industry. Adorno is the one who brang the argument up that the music we listen to is manufactured to the way that mainstream media want it to sound. by doing this they can make all of us think the same way by the way they want the music to sound so that we will all have the same ideologies and they can control what ideologies they want us to have.

The Birmingham school: A group of theorists from Birmingham England who wanted to challenge the Frankfurt school and said the audience are more active than passive. It says the Frankfurt school is making the audience seem very passive than it really is the audience are more active as they choose the type of music they want to listen to and what they listen to is the in demand so then that music will got more backing so will  become more popular.

Dick Hebdige: Hebdige said that Adorno's theory is very one minded and is saying that people are easily manipulated. consumption is the different ways that people consume a product. He says that the audience would be free resist the consumption of larger products. This will then cause there to be different sub cultures which the media will then cater too to make sure that their tastes are satisfied as well. The audience can then continue to resist and not consume the products or conform with their sub culture they have been given. This then shows that the audience are the more active ones as they control what the media are doing.

Conclusion: In conclusion all the theories have their points and they can be seen to be true in many ways. In my opinion I do swing more toward the Birmingham school as their theory makes more sense and sounds less like a conspiracy theory. I will make sure that my artist will appeal to large audience so that I will  be more mainstream so that it will make it easier to be successful.
