Song: To love - Habits
Genre: House
Narrative: Heart broken guy finding ways to get his ex girlfriend off his mind.
Narrative structure: Follow todorov's theory.
Characters: Broken hearted guy, extras, dancers
MES:
Lighting: black and white.
Setting: Park, House and isolated area.
Costume and hair and make up: The boy will wear conformist clothing , hoodie and a hat. Hair neat and tidy and no make up.
Song: Jhene Aiko - The pressure
Structure:
The video is structured how we want to structure ours. Throughout the video it switches between different narratives and the star image. This is done througha pan and fade in and out where we staright cuts.
as the song goes on we see the different problems in the narratives they will all be negative thats how our video is going to play out.
Narratives:
The narratives in this video will be relationship problems and feeling alone in the world. In each narrative at the end the character will be left all alone and then commit suicide.
Performance:
The star is sitting in a dark room with a light over her making her look quite shadowy. This is very similar to hoe we want our star to perform as we want her sitting on the floor in a dark room surrounded by nothing.
Song: Sza - Babylon
Genre: Neo soul
Narrative: We see the life of a boy and girl, their lifes are lonely and seem empty. They are treated badly by everyone and they feel as they are invisible. No one in the world understands them they feel the only way to feel happy is to commit suicide they meet and enjoy their last moments together before they both kill themselves together to end their lives.
Narrative structure: My narrative will follow the Todorov's beginning middle and end.
Characters: Boy, Girl and all the people who make them feel small.

3) Rewind: The rewind technique our group thought would work well with the stars. For example when the rapper is dancing we could show him doing a move and the rewind the move. There is an actual lyric that says "beat rewinds" and we thought it would be a great idea to use rewind editing for that moment.
4)White flash: This technique will be used when we see the artists interact with each other. We thought this because the white would give a great effect of purity and peace and that's how we want our stars portrayed to match the song.
5) Slow motion: I thought it would be a good idea to use slow motion when we see the artist dancing or lip syncing. This will be used because it really highlights key events in the music video.
Conclusion:
All these editing technique have been decided by my group to help make our music video look as professional and consistent as possible. We believe that all these editing techniques will make help the audience gain more understanding of the narratives and stars.
For my music video I will be using the following editing techniques to add effect to the video and make it look better and more appealing.
These are the editing techniques I am going to use:
1) Jump cut: My group decided to use the jump cut technique because it will make it look aggressive when the couple are arguing with each other. We thought that jump cuts show a disruption in time so shows how hectic their relationship is.
2) Slow editing: We are following Goodwin's theory by allowing the editing to match the pace of the song by using slow editing. Our song is very slow and chilled so slow editing will match its pace.

Planning: Lighting and Colour
Lighting and colour
Lighting and colour is a convention that can help created mood and understanding within music videos. It can also help with providing a particular atmosphere in a music video which is why it is important we plan it as we want our music video to have a maximum emotional effect on our audience.
Lighting:
Example 1:
The lighting in this music video is low key with a under lighting highlighting the star in the video so all eyes are on her. The lighting represents the her isolation from the world in her own world where she can be by herself alone. We would like to use something similar when Our female star is lip syncing her parts of the song. This is because it goes with the message we are trying to put across about the problems that young people have in their everyday life and how they feel isolated and alone with no one to help.
Example 2:
The lighting is this video is natural and low key to make it a little dark and also make it look very real and natural. The lighting used is showing how dark a relationship can be but also how natural and real it can be. We would like to use something similar when our couple is on screen to show the darkness and the realness of their relationship. This is because we are showing the problems people have in relationships but also how good they can be and the way they make people feel.
Colour:
Example 1:
The colour in this video is either very bright and colourful or black and white these colours represent how goo the person she is singing about is to her but also how bad the person is. We would like to use something similar for our couple to show how good they are for each other but also how bad just like in the video above. This because we are showing the good side and bad side of their relationship and how much of a struggle it is for the couple.
Example 2:
The colour in this music video is Dark and rainy this colour represents the darkness of the relationship that he was in that he sings about. We would like to use this colour when showing both our narratives to show the darkness of the relationship and the darkness of being bullied. This is because our videos whole purpose is to show people what they are going through and raise awareness about suicide.

Planning: Final idea
Artist: Sza ft. Kendrick Lamar
Song Title: Babylon
Genre: Hip Hop/ Soul
We have chosen the artist SZA because she is such a different arist her song Babylon with her group member Kendrick Lamar has a great meaning of love, trust and betrayal as to why our group thought we could create a good narrative to this song. This song falls under the Hip Hop/Soul genre because its a nice balance of rap and soulful singing which makes it appeal to different audiences. Also the song is so relatable for teenagers so our target audience would be easy to choose.
Video content:
We have decided to create a narrative based around 3 scenarios
Scenario 1: A couple that are going through relationship problems and issues resolve their problems by using violence and aggression. They take their life's by overdosing on pills/drugs.
Scenario 2: A girl that is a young carer of her younger siblings while taking her A level exams is under so much stress she decides to take her life by drowning herself in a river.
Scenario 3: A young girl is in her prom dress depressed walking around crying. We see a group of people bully and make fun of her. She tries to take her life by jumping in front of a moving train
Video structure:
my video structure will consist of narrative and performance because we have the artists singing and rapping with the story behind it.
Star image:
Our star image will be based on the prom girl because she is a perfect representation of a teenager so for her to be the artist she will connect more with our target audience. We wont use Mulvey's male gaze theory because I don't think it will help present the narrative well and the characters are young.

Planning: Star Image
Genre: Hip-Hop/Soul
Traits of stars:
Goodwin: Our star will have allot of star image as we are going to use close ups and extreme close ups with some mid shots also used.
Mulvey: Our star will not have any male gaze as we want our star to be represented as venerable by our audience not as attractive.
Dyer: Our star will not be manufactured and will follow her own ideas and not conform with society.
Hebdige: Our star aiming at a subculture but will have a very niece audience.

*Image*
Our female artist is a young girl between the age of 16-18. She looks quite plane and stripped back only wearing nude make up, if any. We want her to be presented as innocent and vulnerable in order for the audience to sympathy with her.
*Image*
Our male artist is a young boy aged around 18. He isn't over dressed and comes across cool and humble. He dances in the video as well as rapping.
Using Goodwin's theory of star image both of my stars will be shot using close ups, extreme close ups and mid shots.
We will not be using Mulvey's male gaze theory on our female star as we want her to be presented as vulnerable and innocent.
Our male star will be following the popular culture theory as he will be more mainstream than our female artist and will be street dancing which is a part of popular culture.
Will we not be following hebdige's theory as our artist do not represent one subculture, however our female artist will be quite niche.

Diverse Music Videos
What are diverse music videos: Diverse music videos are very different to the mainstream music videos. They are usually made by artists who have very niche audiences that like the artists music. The videos are mainly concept based so this means the video is more focused on ideas rather than a story or the artist/band. Genres that make diverse music videos are mainly the less popular music genres such as electro, dance, rock and alternative.
Cunningham music videos
Aphex twins - Come to daddy
This video was made for the aphex twins it is a very strange video that can not be really understood by the audience the general feel for the audience is that it creeps them out and makes you feel uncomfortable so it is hard to watch.
Aphex twins - Window licker
This video was also for the aphex twins it is also a very strange music video that is also very hard to understand but is clearly taking the mick out of one of the biggest genres in music R&B. It also makes the audience feel uncomfortable and confused by the way the video is made.
Bjork - All is full of love
This video was made for Bjork but you can clearly see it was made by Cunningham as it is very abstract and different and makes the audience confused and uncomfortable.
Christopher Cunningham's credits: Cunningham has won many awards including the golden pencil award for Bjork's all is full of love video and also won a MTV music video award for breakthrough video and a Grammy award for the best short film.
Conventions of Chris Cunningham's music videos: A Chris Cunningham music video can be clearly seen if he created the video you will know by the diverse concept themed videos that he creates for his artists. His videos are made to make his audience feel uncomfortable and confused when they watch the video. distorted humans, low-key, obscure images
Opinion of his work: My opinion of Chris Cunningham's work is that he does what he makes his videos for but I don't not like the videos he creates as they make me feel very uncomfortable when I watch them.
Gondrys music videos
Gary Jules - Mad World
This video is extremely simple and only uses one camera shot throughout the entire video. There is no start image the artist only appears in small sections of the video. The simplicity of the music video makes it hard for the audience to understand.
Kylie Minogue - Come into my world
This video has very complexed editing and is very unique which engages the audience to watch more of the video. Since its very unconventional it makes the audience want to watch more. It has a lot of star image as it is performance based and is focused on the star.
Daft Punk - Around the world
This video is very diverse and concept based music video it is fun with allot of dancing to entertain and engage the audience. It uses allot of colours but has no star image throughout the video.
Gondrys Credits:
Won an Oscar in 2005 for best writing and screenplay. Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind. Nominated for a BAFTA award 2004 Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind. Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films, USA nominated 2005 for Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind. Bodil Awards Nominated for Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind. Bram Stoker Awards Won for best screenplay 2005.
Common conventions of his work is repition in the music videos.
In my opinion Gondry's work is very original and it is very intellectual in the way it make the think in order to understand the repetition theme an why this is being used however the narrative is much easier to understand and does connect wit the audience.
Advantage of diverse music videos:
I think that diverse music video should stay away from mainstream as they have their own audience and fan base that they appeal to so they dont need to conform to the mainstream to stay succesful.
Conclusion:
I have learnt that music videos dont all have to conform to be succes even if that is the easy route for most artist. I dont think my music video will be diverse at it is easier to be a succes if the video is mainstream.

Music Channels
Intro: Music channels are important because they provide a platform for music channels to be seen on TV. Channels provide the audience with a wide variety of choice of the music they are looking for on the channel each mainstream genre will have a music channel dedicated to that genre of music so views are guaranteed.
Music Channels today: There are a lot of music channels on today's TV to suit the tastes of most people they have become more popular as time has gone on and technology has improved this therefore made music go from very little channels to many.
Examples of music channel:

Under representation of music channels:
There are many genres of music that are not largely represtented on music channels for example:
Folk and country are underrepresented because in the UK since they are more populer in the USA.
Religious music is not represented well due to a decline in the amount of people who are religious in this day and age.
Advantage of music channels:
I think my music video would play on MTV as it will be very mainstream and appeal to a large audience that already had a big following.

Different production roles:

The director is the leader of the music videos production the director calls the shots throughout the videos production.

Our groups roles and why:
Chardelle:
Director, Story boarder and hair and make up. Chardelle has been given these roles she was director and hair and make up from last year she has been given the role of director again as last year she got 110% out of the group and made sure we were on task. She has been given hair and make up again as she is again the only girl in our group so is the only one with experience in hair and make up. This year she is now the story boarder as she is the director so she can show the idea clearly.
Lashane:
Producer, Print designer, Photographer and Locations manager. Lashane has these roles because he was good at managing the budget last year so was great at producing. He is now the location manger as he knows very good locations for our video. He is now the photographer as it will be convenient for him to do so while we film and he has experience with photography. He is the print designer as he is the photographer so he will know what he wants to do with the shots on the album and in the digi pack.
Me:
Camera operator, Lighting and Editor. I have these roles because two of them I also had last year and I was chosen to be camera man and editor last year as I have many technical skills which makes it easy for me. I have now been given the role of lighting manager as I have the technical skills and also it helps as I am controlling the camera and the shots.
Why has this been beneficial:
This has been beneficial because everyone in our group knows what we are going to be doing so this has been saved us time and confusion when making our music video.

Planning: Similar videos
Structure - Jhené Aiko - The Pressure (Explicit):
Structure:
The video is structured the way we want ours to be with many different narratives throughout the video and shows star image. This is done using pans and fades in and out with straight cuts. As the song goes on song goes on it shows the problems of all the characters and shows all negative narrative and this is how we want our video to be.
Narratives:
The narratives in this video are extremely similar to our narrative for example we have relationship problems in our video and so does this one. At the end of the video the characters is all alone and that is how our video will be except the characters will commit suicide in our video.
Performance:
The star is in a dark room alone with a light over her with darkness around her this is how we want our star to be in a room alone in the dark.
Artist - Rihanna - Stay ft. Mikky Ekko:
Camera work/Facial expression:
To show her emotion allot of close up shots are used throughout the video as she is crying to get her sadness across to the audience. She has a very drained and zooned out look throughout the video.
Body language:
Her body language is very into herself as she is hugging her knees and hiding her body showing she just wants to be alone by herself.
Performance:
She is alone in a bath tub throughout the video to show the audience she wants to isolate herself from everyone else. In our video we want our star to put this across to the audience.
Costume/Make up:
Her make up is very nude and natural showing the audience she is very stripped back this allows her to connect with the audience as she is more real.
Content - Five Finger Death Punch - Coming Down:

Planning: Locations
Locations:
Location 1 the house:
We decided to use a house as our first location as it is suitable for the first narrative in our music video. The house is where the couple in our first narrative will be arguing and fighting around the house as the song is played over it lyrics relevant to this are "And I cant remember the last time I took love from anyone." This is relevant as when at home with your partner your meant to feel loved yet the couple contradict this as they argue and fight we felt this was a valid problem to bring up in our video and fits what we are trying to put across to our audience.
Advantages:
Relevant to lyrics: "Crucify me."
Relevant to genre: Hip-Hop usually uses run down areas as it is aimed at the lower classes in society so people can relate to it.
Relevant to target audience: If a teenager wants to run away public transport is what they run to first.
Advantages:
Relevant to lyrics: "Are you hating yourself? Do you really hate me." This will show our second narrative the prom girl being bullied then running away wanting to be alone.
Relevant to genre: Urban streets relevant to Hip-Hop.
Relevant to genre: Young people just want to run away and be alone when hurt or in times of stress.
Advantages:
Relevant to genre:
Hip-hop is all about people, themselves and their feelings this shows this location is relevant to the genre as its a place of thought and self reflection.
Relevant to target audience:
It suits the idea of wanting to curl up and hide alone this is a common thing between young teens to want to be alone and think and they are our target audience.
Advantages:
In conclusion researching my locations has been very beneficial to me as I now know the strengths and weaknesses of our locations and how we are going to use them therefore it is going to make filming allot easier.

Planning: Outline of narrative
Outline of narractive:
I like the video that we have chosen as it is talking about and making people more aware about the problem people go through in their live everyday such as suicide , parental problems and Relationship issues.
I like the video that we have chosen as it is talking about and making people more aware about the problem people go through in their live everyday such as suicide , parental problems and Relationship issues.
The music video will be mostly performance and narrative based with a little bit of concept. We have decided to plan our video like this because this allows us to be able to tell a story and raise awareness of some of the struggles people go through as well as have star image and bring entertainment for the viewer through the dancers.
Theories:
Goodwin-
We are following some of this theory as we will be including editing that matches the pace of the song and the visuals will make sense to the lyrics.
Dyer-
We will be following this theory as we are using star image with our 2 main characters by using lip syncing the rapper and the singer.
Mulvey-
We will not be using this theory as we do not want our female characters to be represented as sexual object and instead we want them to be represented as vulnerable and innocent in order for the audience to understand their struggles.
Hebdige:
We are not going to use this theory as although our visuals and themes are not mainstream they do not resist mainstream and do not fall into a subculture and instead is aimed at a niece audience.
Adorno:
We are not following this idea as we are not trying to manipulate put audience and turn them into masses with our video.
